The Canvas integration with First Steps is accessible through a module in a course. It is a simple SSO, nothing more.

Tell your students to keep their cameras on. Inform them that the writing assignment will be locked and inaccessible to them until the assessment begins and it will be locked again once they submit their work or when the assessment ends, whichever comes first. They must submit it before the conclusion of the class or they will be locked out and will not be able to submit it. Once they submit it, they cannot open it again.
