This is a trivet. A trivet was used to put hot things on it until they cooled. This one, in particular, depicts a dragonfly which is very signifigant to the Japanese. The crafters of this piece,Tiffany Studios, were very proud.

 This is a trivet and a whimsey. A trivet is a device in which you put something hot on, until it cools. A whimsey is a piece made by a craftsman, and taken home for his personal use. The maker of this piece, Edwin Hayward, was a worker at Tiffany Studios.
