SPQR is an initialism from a Latin phrase, Senatus Populusque Romanus (“The Senate and the People of Rome” or “The Senate and Roman People”), referring to the government of the ancient Roman Republic, and used as an official signature of the government.  The wolf nurses the two brothers Romulus and Remus, who according to legend founded Rome.  This mosaic can be found in Milan, Italy in San Ambrogio, the Galleria.  Submitted by Lylee Van Pelt

Mosaic

Mosaic is the art of creating images with an assemblage of small pieces of colored glass, stone, or other material. It may be a technique of decorative art, an aspect of interior decoration or of cultural and spiritual significance as in a cathedral. Small tiles or fragments of pottery (known as tesserae, diminutive tessellae), or of colored glass or clear glass backed with metal foils are used to create a pattern or picture. (Wikipedia, 2009)
