Q: Why more standards for women?

Q: Why are there so many more standards for women’s bodies than men’s?

A: The short and snarky answer is because, in too many cases, men make the rules.  The longer and more complex answer is that throughout history women’s power has been feared by men and they’ve done everything they can to try to subvert and control it.  Think about it – women are awesome!!  They have the power to nurture life and give birth.  They have greater endurance than men, have more emotional awareness and emotional intelligence than men,  have sharper memory than men, have greater access to and facility with language than men, and are better at creating community than men.  These are all the qualities that make one an idea leader, especially in a society based on cooperation rather than competition.  Ever since men rose to positions of power they have seen women as a giant threat to that power and they have created countless rules, standards, and limits for women.  Now, of course, not all men are afraid of women’s power.  Some welcome it and see it as a positive thing.
