The Hyperloop: The Future of Transportation?

In 2013 the inventor and innovator Elon Musk proposed a plan for a fifth primary mode of transportation, after cars, planes, trains, and ships, which he called the Hyperloop. The concept is to create a vacuum tube down which a manned pod is propelled at hypersonic speed. It was to go in a loop between two destinations at speeds that would allow it to become the fastest method of travel available. Elon Musk called it “a cross between a Concord and a railgun and an air hockey table” and yet despite the insanity of the proposition he, working with SpaceX engineers, released a early systems design in 2013. At this point, it seemed guaranteed that Musk had a new venture in mind.  However, instead of founding another company, he publicly released the Hyperloop Alpha design with the goal to “see if the people can find ways to improve it”. Do not read this book or this review if you are uncomfortable with any of these things. But thanks for stopping by anyways. Disclaimer: I am not making you read an article about a super cringy book. Hi, Dylan here, the Star Wars timeline is confusing. So in anticipation of Solo: a Star Wars Story, I will be publishing a Star Wars timeline, both in chronological order and in order of release. Earth Force 2018!

Earth Force has been a long-running tradition here at Friends’ Central. The eighth graders are tasked with identifying, researching, and solving a problem that they have observed in society. The problem may only affect the FCS community, or perhaps another community or the world as a whole. Students build a website and work with a group to solve the issue, reaching out to other community members and building support systems for the final impact. Adele Goldader (‘22) has been working with Tiffany Qin (‘22) to recycle used chip and snack bags and send then to facilities where they can be reused. Adele says that, “at least half the snacks that people eat during snack and lunch are chip bags, and that’s a big percentage of the waste that we accumulate at school.” They’re building a designated space for recycling the chip bags, aiming to limit the amount of waste that…

Flyers Playoff Recap

The Flyers made their way into the playoffs on April 7th by beating the New York Rangers 5-0 with the captain Claude Giroux getting a hat trick! The first playoff series for the Flyers was against the two-time defending champion Pittsburgh Penguins. The Philadelphia Flyers are the Penguin’s rival so this was bound to be a very interesting series. We really did not know who would win the series going into it. It could have been a very one-sided series or both teams could be very close.   If the Flyers had won the Stanley Cup Finals it would truly have been the year of Philadelphia Sports. Three games into the series, it was 7-0 Pit, 5-1 Phi, 5-1 Pit. We were expecting these games to be very close because of the insane rivalry, but it was the complete opposite. We also expected very physical games, and we did get…

Zuckerberg’s Congressional Testimony

On April 10th, Mark Zuckerberg entered Congress, the black suit he was wearing in contrast to his standard grey shirt displaying the severity of his position. In 2014 the British political consulting firm Cambridge Analytica began gathering data on Facebook users and using it to influence the opinions of voters in favor of the politicians who hired them. The data collection was done through a survey app called thisisyourdigitallife which gathered the data of anyone who allowed the app to access their Facebook account as well as of the people connected to them through Facebook, amounting to up to 87 million according to Facebook. On learning of it there was public outcry and facebook apologized, however CA continued to possess their data. Controversy arose again when in March, former employee of CA, Christopher Wylie released details on the data collection. This resulted in CA claiming to have deleted all the…

The Day of Silence 2018

Last week, students and teachers in the Friends’ Central community participated in the Day of Silence. On the Day of Silence, people choose to silence their voices to symbolize the forced silence of the LGBTQ+ every day. This helps spread the word of groups that are not often heard because of stereotypes that are misleading. Ms. Pidot, a Spanish teacher in the middle school, said that this is her 4th year participating in the Day of Silence. She says that each year she finds a different minority group to put light on. She said, “sometimes it is tough to find ways to interact effectively with my class, so I try showing my class what it might be like for people in minority groups and why there is a struggle. We try to find ways to make the Day of Silence interesting each year by looking at different groups and making them…

Shallcross Update!

SHALLCROSS IS CLOSER THAN EVER TO COMPLETION! Shallcross is coming along quite well, and will soon be done, at least from what we’ve heard. I went inside to take some photos and was surprised to see some new features, such as a shop and a new entrance by the side. Side entrance under construction. New store from outside. I also managed to interview Mrs.Quinn about the new shallcross, and asked her a few burning questions I had. Interview: Q: When’s the estimated completion time of ShallCross? A: Sometime during the summer because there are certain components that will be done, but some rooms like the place were you sit and eat will be done before summer. She also said to redo some of the meeting room it might take a while. Mrs. Quinn stated that there were, “Different Stages,” one for the meeting room, one for the eating part of…

Fortnite: Will Tilted Towers be destroyed?

Fortnite has exploded since the beginning of 2018. With the release of Fortnite Mobile for Apple devices people have more access to the game making it even more mainstream. Today we are talking about one of the most controversial cities on the Fortnite Map known as Tilted Towers. At the beginning of April, Epic Games put a small light in the sky that was not distinguishable from the rest of the stars in the sky, but a couple weeks ago people noticed it and realized it was getting closer to the map day by day. I am going to talk about what might go in the place of Tilted Towers after the comet strikes. Tilted Towers is a hot spot right now, but Epic Games has been trying to find a way to get rid of it. Since this season of the battle pass is space themed they saw a…
