Trump At The UN

Since the late twentieth century the office of the President of the United States has been respected. Throughout the world the American presidency and democracy was a sign of hope and most countries respected the person in that office. On the 25th of September that changed. The leader of the free world was met with an outburst of laughter at the United Nations General Assembly meeting after stating, ¨In less than two years, my administration has accomplished more than almost any administration in the history of our country.¨ He then followed up by saying, ¨so true.¨ The president was talking to the U.N about the change there has been in the world, how with short conversations the North Koreans they have made ¨encouraging measures that few could have imagined.” He mentioned how India has made strong moves to diminish poverty. While these accomplishments are great, President Trump phrased them in…

Korea Enters Under One Flag at PyeongChang 2018

Ever since World War II, the relationship between North and South Korea has been one of the most complicated tensions in modern history. However, world leaders are trying to build peace and this starts at the 23rd Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang County, South Korea. At the opening ceremony, the two countries marched under the Korean Unification Flag, and South Korean president Moon Jae-in watched with Kim Yo-jong, sister of Kim Jong-un, along with Mike Pence, Japanese Prime Minister Abe Shinzo, and others. In addition, the two Koreas will be competing with a joint women’s ice hockey team that features the best athletes from the Korean peninsula. The two countries are trying to use the Olympics as an opportunity to build peace, and are working to build a better future. As a second-generation Korean American, I was very surprised when I first heard the news. Many of my Korean friends and…

State of the Union

On Tuesday, January 30, POTUS Donald Trump delivered his State of The Union address. He delivered his speech beautifully and paused at the perfect times making his speech very dramatic and interesting. He brought national heroes and people of great accomplishments to his speech. Making it a touching speech showing heroics and heartfelt messages. He had a very controlled tone making him appear calm and peaceful. He also delivered a very bi-partisan message that even the democrats applauded. Things quickly fell apart though when he finished his introduction. Donald Trump lied fourteen times within an hour and half speech; the most any president has lied during any State of the Union speech.. He got boos from grown congressman that acted as though they were watching Riley trying to shoot a basketball. If you put away the fact that many of Trump’s points were lies, he had an excellent speech. When…

Paul Manafort Indicted

Paul Manafort was charged with 12 Indictments[1]:conspiracy against the United States, conspiracy to launder money[2], unregistered agent of a foreign principal[3], false and misleading FARA statements[4], false statements[5], and seven counts of failure to file reports of foreign bank and financial accounts. Manafort’s time on the Trump campaign ended up lasting fewer than five months (from late March to mid-August 2016), it was both an eventful period and a crucial one for Trump/Russia activity. Manafort has been on the FBI[6] radars since 2014. He surrendered to them on 10/30/17. Below are the POTUS’s responses to case as he posted using Twitter. The result of this find will lead to: renewed strength in the investigation, and a stressful time for the Manafort family. Below is a link that will take you to the Robert Mueller 31- page indictment. https://www.documentcloud.org/documents/4163370-Paul-Manafort-and-Rick-Gates-indictment-10-30-2017.html#document/p1 [1]:Indictments: a formal charge or accusation of a serious crime [2]:Money Laundering:…

Asia Kate Dillon and a Theory on Gender-Neutrality

A show aired on the channel Showtime now includes a non-binary character. Taylor Mason, a character on the show Billions, is a gender-neutral character whose pronouns are they, theirs, and them. The actor that plays Taylor, Asia Kate Dillon, also identifies as non-binary. They are the first gender-neutral actor playing a gender-neutral character on television, and not only that, but their performance has put them up for an Emmy nomination submission. Showtime approached Asia and told them that they were going to submit them for an Emmy nomination. The channel asked Asia how they would like to be submitted, as an actor or an actress. Dillon was conflicted about how they would like to be entered, and so wrote a letter to the Emmys in order to sort out exactly what the two categories meant. The Emmys responded saying that any eligible performer may be entered in either category for…

Rachel Maddow Releases Trump’s Tax Return

It’s finally happened. Donald Trump’s tax returns have been released. Well, at least one of them. President Trump did not release it himself, however. Rachel Maddow of the left-leaning news network MSNBC got ahold of the leaked tax return from 2005. Maddow received the return from investigative reporter David Cay Johnston, a tax expert. It is unknown who sent it to Johnston in the mail, but it’s thought by some that it was sent by the president himself. People were excited to know about the leak before the show, when Maddow tweeted about it two hours prior. The tweet was shared 68,000 times before the show started at 9 pm. This excitement was helpful to her ratings, as well. The Rachel Maddow Show had the highest viewer count in eight years, an average of 2.62 million viewers. The White House made a statement following Rachel Maddow’s tweet, stating that President Trump…

What’s Happening in the White House?: Weeks 6 and 7

Hi again, Dylan and Riley here, and this is our sixth and seventh week working on “What’s Happening in the White House?”. Thank you for all your support; we will be continuing this regular column until the end of the year. In the past two weeks, Mr. Trump has signed the new travel ban, ACA /“Trumpcare.” Last Tuesday, President Trump signed his most recent executive order, the new travel ban. It is a lot like the last one but Iraq is off the list. It is in effect for 90 days again. It is still receiving a TON of backlash. It will not come into effect until March 19. The populace is referring to the Affordable Care Act replacement as “Trumpcare.” The White House has been trying to suppress this name, and they are calling it “the ACA replacement.” This bill is being used to replace the ACA, more commonly…

What’s Happening in the White House?: The Last Two Weeks

Hi, I’m Dylan with Riley here and these are the things President Trump has done in the past two weeks. He has greenlighted the Dakota Access Pipeline, started planning how to build the wall on the U.S.-Mexico border, and started to dismantle Obamacare. Michael Flynn’s resignation and the Trump campaign’s contact with Russian intelligence during the election have been in the news this week. Last Week Trump signed three executive orders to benefit oil pipelines and remove Obama’s environmental protections. The Dakota Access bill says that the pipeline is “90 percent complete,” and only needs to get the permits and government approval to “construct and operate the DAPL, including easements or rights-of-way to cross federal areas.” Trump also signed an order demanding that the Secretary of Commerce make a plan ensuring all pipelines are make of U.S. iron and steel. There are “yuge” questions about what the orders will actually mean,…

What’s Happening in the White House?: Weekend Order and Supreme Court Nominee

Hi, I’m Dylan and I am starting a column on what President Trump has been been doing in the White House during the past week. Two things that Trump has done in the past week have been his nomination of a Supreme Court Justice to fill Justice Scalia’s vacated position and his Executive Order on immigration.     Yesterday, January 31, President Trump nominated Neil Gorsuch for the Supreme Court Justice position. Gorsuch is known for his firm conservative views, and he could tip the court’s balance on hot-button issues like abortion, voting rights and religious freedom. Gorsuch is 49 years old, making him the youngest Supreme Court nominee in 25 years. He was among a group of federal judges reported in recent weeks to be on Trump’s shortlist.  Gorsuch, a Colorado native, is popular among most Republicans. This past weekend, President Trump has jumped right into controversy with an Executive Order on immigration and refugees. He…
