From “Spirit Week” to Spirit Weak

As announced in assembly, via email, and on the bulletin board, three weeks ago was “Spirit Week” at FCS. That Friday, we were invited to wear our pajamas, Tuesday we were encouraged to dress as a character, Wednesday was lumberjack impersonation day, and Thursday was an all-black attire day. We ended Spirit Week on Friday by wearing our schools’ colors: blue, gray and white. However, under the observation of many, lots of folks have turned Spirit Week into “Spirit Weak.”

New Class Suggestion: Realism

Hello there! I’m here to suggest a new class. I call it “Realism: Everything your teachers didn’t teach you.” Basically, it teaches skills that people use in the real world. For example, how to use a bank account, how to read the stock market, how to properly clean your house, how to paint a house, and other basic life skills. Please leave me some feedback on this topic. Should it should happen or not?

Top 10 Board Games

Dungeons and Dragons: 9.4  Dungeons and Dragons is an amazing role playing game in which you create a character and play the role of it in a fantastical world. You will go on epic adventures with thousands of ending, fight fantasy monsters, and work through intense riddles. This game has the option to play pre-made adventures, or you can create your own representing your personal taste. Also you can play as the dungeon master where you hold the balance of the world that you create in your very hands and can decide whether or not you’re brave fighters, wizards, clerics, and thieves will survive or die. This game has a huge variety in age requirements but it could be ages 10+ or 16+. It all depends on the adventure.

MLB Postseason 2015 Recap and 2016 Season Predictions

Postseason 2015 Recap The 2015 Major League Baseball postseason was one to remember. Many different types of franchises dueled for the title. These included the team with the three young fireballers: Matt Harvey, Jacob DeGrom, and Noah Syndergaard, and second baseman Daniel Murphy, who led the majors with seven home runs in the postseason. Any guesses? Yup. The New York Mets. Another completely different franchise, the Toronto Blue Jays, had the best offense in baseball during the regular season, but sometimes struggled to score runs during their push for the title. They miraculously defeated ex-Phillie Cole Hamels and the Texas Rangers by coming back and winning three consecutive elimination games on the road, but then were dispatched by the eventual World Series Champion Kansas City Royals in the ALCS. Also, let’s not forget the Houston Astros, who miraculously rebuilt their team and made the postseason following 2013 and 2014 seasons…

What Does It Mean to Be a Boy?

On November 17, 2015, students and faculty took a break from the morning’s traditional classes to take part in special programing surrounding the issues of gender identity in social situations. Middle School students had the option of going to Program 1  and hearing visiting author Patricia Ottaviano discuss female social dynamics or Program 2 and discuss what it means to be a boy or man by watching the movie The Mask You Live In, a movie about issues of masculinity. I attended Program 2, and there were a few things that resonated with me from the day. Here are four tips for boys to remember: Be yourself. Though it sounds like something out of a Disney movie, sometimes it is important to step back and say to yourself, “Is this really what I want to do?” By this, I mean it is important to not do things just because they…

Field Trips Galore–But Wait, There’s More!

We eighth graders were on the road again! Following an hour-long bus ride on Tuesday, November 10th, we arrived at Paradise Farms, a team-building center for young people. While on our day trip, we did various activities from silently arranging ourselves in a line in order of birthdate to untangling a knot in a rope. We also went on a long hike, and climbed a wooden wall without handles. Paradise Farms, which is a primarily outdoors facility, was rainy during our visit. However, Cameron Mack ‘20 didn’t mind the unanticipated weather change. “I think the rain brought us closer, because we were all cold and wet together.” Mack also remarked, “The trip reminded me a lot of Echo Hill, but with fewer activities because it was shorter. I really liked it.” Cam later added somewhat jokingly, “My only disappointment was that it was called Paradise Farm, but there were no farm animals!” I, on…
