Shallcross Renovation Exclusive

We recently interviewed Mrs. Quinn and Mr. Terrell to get you, the community, more information on the renovation of our shared community space in Shallcross Hall. Mrs. Quinn shared that the newly renovated building will have more glass so that visitors on tours will have an easier way to look into the classrooms without disrupting them. People will be able to look into our community from the outside, and it will be easier for folks to visit. Mrs. Quinn says that this change will “add more light and air” to the dining hall. The cafeteria may have a double height space and the architects are also thinking of making separate food lines so that we do not have to wait as long for the same delicious food!  The cafeteria should also have a cozier feel so that students are not compelled to sit on the art displays currently in the…

Mini-Course Review 2015

Mini-courses are three-day classes of your choice that range in subject from science to art to history. Mini-courses are usually the week before Spring Break. There were ten different options for mini-courses this year: “ART + Chemistry = Alchemy” “Our Fightin’ Phils” “72-Hour Film Festival” (link to short films: “Kids with Superpowers,” “Taken by the Dark,” and “Lost and Found” are by FCS students) “WFCS: Phoenix Radio” (link to station site) “FCS Idol” “Survivor” “Celtic Designs” “The Arctic” “Lincoln’s Assassination” “Comparative Vertebrate Anatomy and Physiology” In this brief review I will outline three of these mini-courses: ART + Chemistry = Alchemy In the alchemy mini-course, students focused on food chemistry and how different foods are made and composed chemically. On the second day, this mini-course took a trip to the Old Rittenhouse Village and made paper and pancakes. (Source: Hugh Braham) Lincoln’s Assassination In this mini-course, students watched videos on the assassination and looked at some of…

Just Japanese: Most Popular Vocaloids

A vocaloid is a singing voice synthesis made by Yamaha and a computer software. The software allows users to put melodies and lyrics in order to synthesize singing. In other words, with this technology, singing can be produced without a singer using fragments of voices recorded from actual singers called the Singer Library. They have created musical pieces and have released them on Nico Video and YouTube. With these releases, vocaloids became extremely popular. Also the UGC (self-produced content) grew at a fast pace. From there, CDs with vocaloid songs entered the top-seller lists and became popular songs for people to sing at karaoke, The software and music created from it have created a music culture in itself. Vocaloid technology has grown stronger and now few people can tell their voices are fake. Vocaloids became so popular that they found a way to turn them into holograms for concerts. (Paraphrased…

An Outsider’s Perspective on FCS vs. [Name Withheld] Public School

My friend and fellow journalist Kai Schenck of the eighth grade has offered to write me a story detailing his time in a particular public school and how it compares to his time at Friends’ Central. This is Kai’s story: I often hear people in the hallways complaining about various aspects of the school. Don’t be offended, teachers and staff. I’m sure you did the same thing when you were in school. I sometimes even join in on this practice, but what others don’t know is that this school provides a very different experience than others. Okay, so I went to this school called [NAME WITHHELD] Middle School for my sixth and seventh grade years. It was a rather rich and privileged public school. Being one of the best public schools in the Tampa Bay area, it was very crowded, with 850 kids in the school and about 280 kids per…
