The Government Shutdown and What It Means for Our Country

The border wall was one of Trump’s first campaign promises, and he is currently asking for $5 billion to fund its building. Trump has also decided to shutdown the government to try and get Democrats to fund his wall. To make matters worse, this shutdown is leaving thousands without jobs, while national parks like the National Mall are flooded with trash because there is no one there to pick it up. This fight is not without reason, as Trump has said on multiple occasions that the south border is bringing in drugs, gangs and human traffickers. Trump also made a speech on Tuesday the 8th about the current situation on the fight for border security.  Trump said “Democrats in Congress have refused to acknowledge the crisis and they have refused to provide our brave border agents with the tools they desperately need to protect our families and our nation.” Trump went…

Flyers Personnel Changes

On November 26th, the Flyers fired their general manager. Ron Hextall has officially been let go. He was been with the organization for over four years, joining in May of 2014. The Flyers fan base has mixed feelings on whether he really needed to go. Some say he did a good job of fixing the salary cap situation when he was hired, and the coach should’ve been fired instead. Others say he did not handle the goal situation and should’ve been fired. But regardless he has been replaced with Chuck Fletcher. Many are saying he is the one who will finally bring the Stanley cup back to Philly.   OPINION: In all honesty Hexstall was a horrible general manager and deserved to be fired. He did not handle our goal situation very well. The flyers have never had “that goalie” in a long time. We’ve never had a goalie that…

Third Parties in Politics

During the 2018 and 2016 elections you may have heard of some other parties that are not Democrat or Republican. You may have heard terms such as “Libertarian” or “Green Party.”  These parties are third parties in America’s government. Yes, believe it or not it’s not just Democrat or Republican, you have more of a choice. Now the third party that is the largest is the Libertarian Party. The concept of Libertarianism is having as little government (and as much freedom) as possible. You may have heard about their candidate in the 2016 election Gary Johnson who ran in the 2018 midterms and got 15.5% in the Senate Midterms. The next biggest third party in America would be the Green party. They are a left wing progressive party that is against war and violence and believes in Green politics. The idea of Green politics is creating a government that is…

Brick-and-Mortar Bankruptcies

Recently we have been seeing a lot of companies and stores who specialize in brick and mortar locations have come to a close. Just recently we have seen this take the profits out of another chain, Sears. Before Sears it was another chain franchise that was making millions back in its prime, “Toys R Us”. This is all due to the rise of online shopping. And it’s not just big brands like “Sears” and “Toys R Us”. Over time I’ve seen a lot of stores in my town close down because it’s just a lot easier for customers to buy their products online from big brands. Because of this rise big brands like “Kmart” have gone completely bankrupt. But why has online shopping caused so many stores to go bankrupt? Well “Supply and Diamond Chain Executive” wrote an article stating reasons such as, 24/7 shopping, World Shipping, Greater Choice and…

8th Grade D. C. Trip

On Sunday, September 30th, the eighth grade left for our annual Washington D.C. trip. This trip included the new African American History & Culture Museum.  The trip had a lot of build-up, especially about the lobbying opportunity to talk to our senators and congressmen about two issues: climate change and gun control. Two issues that are very relevant in today’s politics especially with millennials. But I wanted to know what other 8th graders in FCS thought of DC. Devlin Kolimago in eighth grade said that it was “fun and tiring, we had to walk a lot and the food was good just expensive.” “Lobbying was good and fun but it wasn’t arguing, it was more of agreeing.” Next I asked Dev Gupta, also in eighth grade. He said it was a lot of fun. He had already been to DC before so I asked him what he thought of the…

New Flyers Mascot: Gritty

Last Monday for the first time in over forty years the Philadelphia Flyers revealed a new mascot. His name is “Gritty.” What he is something I can’t answer because I don’t know. In my opinion he looks like Animal (the drummer) from The Muppets. Some people say that it is a bit creepy. I think that it just takes some time to get used to. The first time you look at him you’ll think, “What is this abomination? Is this a joke? How are the kids going to like this?” And I can completely agree with you because that’s what I thought when I saw him for the first time. Since I will be attending the preseason game against the Rangers, hopefully I’ll be able to him in person, and then I can really give my honest opinion. Additionally there is a lot of marketing work that goes into making…
