What’s Happening in the White House?: Weeks 4 and 5

Hi, I’m Dylan with Riley here and this is our fourth and fifth week following “What’s Happening in the White House?”. Thank you for all your support; we will be continuing this regular column until the end of the year. In the past two weeks, President Trump has accused Sweden of terrorism and is costing the American people more is security than Obama did in his first term. We will also cover his speeches at CPAC and to Congress.

According to CNN and ABC, the New York Police Department says it spends $500,000 a day just to protect the President’s residence at Trump Tower. President Trump’s travel to Mar-a-Lago have cost $10 million in travel and security. Eric and Don Jr. are in Dubai, Melania and Barron are in New York, Ivanka is traveling, and the President is in D.C. They all receive a security detail, costing the American people millions of tax dollars.

President Trump stated last week, “You look at what’s happening last night in Sweden. Sweden, who would believe this? Sweden. They took in large numbers. They’re having problems like they never thought possible.” Sweden has been openly been taking in Syrian and Middle Eastern refugees. There have been no issues and no terrorist attacks whatsoever, making President Trump’s statements misleading.

On February 24, President Trump gave a speech to CPAC 2017. President Trump covered topics including jobs in America, the “fake news,” immigration (specifically illegal immigration), and the southern border wall, to name a few. President Trump also said, “I love the First Amendment; nobody loves it better than me.” He was refusing to his travel ban which was blocked by a 9th Circuit Court of Appeals judge. President Trump also talked about “fighting for you,” reinforcing his support for the people. The audience also chanted “USA” multiple times.

On Tuesday night, President Trump gave a speech about drugs, jobs, welfare, poverty, terrorism, and the national debt. The final speech heard by Congress was not finalized until 6:30 pm. According to many reporters, Trump seemed more “presidential” while speaking. While his tone may have been new, his ideas were standard for Republicans.
