Making Steam and Bubbles with Dry Ice

Do you remember, seventh graders, that on October 30, 2015, Ms. Sims showed us how to make liquid steam? Or how you were able to make bubbles that you could put on your hands? Well, if any of you were wondering how to do that in your very own homes, look no further. Here is a tutorial on how to make your water bubbles and steam!

Things you need:

  • Dry Ice
  • Warm Water
  • Soap (any kind works!)
  • Gloves!
  • An open container of some sort
  • An open container that has a pipe connected to it, like this:

Optional:

  • Food Coloring

How to Make Steam

STEP 1: Fill your container (not with the pipe) with warm water. Add your food coloring if you like.

STEP 2: Take out the dry ice.

WARNING: Remember to wear gloves when you take out the dry ice! Dry ice is EXTREMELY cold and should not be handled with bare hands!

STEP 3: Break off a small piece of the dry ice and drop it in the warm water.

STEP 4: Watch as your container starts spewing out mist!

Here’s a video where you can see what happens!

How to Make Bubbles

STEP 1: Get your container with the pipe attached and fill it with warm water.

STEP 2: Put a chunk of dry ice in the container (look back at the warning!). If you do it right, smoke should come from both the top of the container and the end of the pipe.

STEP 3: Get another clean container and fill it with soap (any soap with do).

STEP 4: Stick the pipe that’s shooting out mist into the container of soap.

STEP 5: Keep the pipe in for a second or two, then pull it out.

STEP 6: After that, wait and you will see a bubble starting to form!

REPEAT IF YOU WANT TO DO AGAIN!
