On October 2, 2013, two staff writers and a photographer interviewed Mrs. Quinn about her experience as the newest principal of the Middle School. When we entered Mrs. Quinn’s office on the first floor of the Middle School building, we immediately noticed how neat and organized it is. Being an efficient and coordinated principal, Mrs. Quinn was hard at work writing and checking emails when we walked in. She quickly turned her attention toward us. She sat at a wooden desk and a few chairs with the Friends’ Central seal on them were placed along the wall. We sat in the chairs and the interview began. Mrs. Quinn was very kind and descriptive in answering our questions, giving us thorough, insightful answers that every Middle School student could benefit from reading.

Interviewers: What’s your favorite part about being the Principal of the middle school?

Mrs. Quinn: Getting to know students and making sure they have a great experience every day.

Interviewers: What are your daily inspirations?

Mrs. Quinn: I’m inspired by the Quaker philosophy and by seeing students who love to come to school and be great learners.

Interviewers: Now that you’re a principal, how has your schedule changed?

Mrs. Quinn: I have a lot more meetings, I have no advisory this year, I spend much more time with adults, and I don’t teach as much.

Interviewers: What changes would you like to make to the Middle School and what would you like to keep the same?

Mrs. Quinn: I would like to continue to have new ways of teaching–there are always new and exciting ways to teach and improve with technology. I would like to keep the positive and energetic culture and special activities like Service.

Interviewers: When did you decide that you wanted to be a principal?

Mrs. Quinn: A few years ago, I decided to go back to graduate school, and got a degree to be a school leader. When the Principal’s opened up, I thought I would be a good match. I didn’t decide overnight.

Interviewers: Would you ever want to be a principal in the Upper School?

Mrs. Quinn: No. I’ve always been a Middle School teacher, and my favorite group of students to work with are the middle schoolers. The Middle School is my home, and I feel like I really belong here.

Interviewers: During your day, what do you spend most of your time doing?

Mrs. Quinn: Talking to people–parents, teachers, students–about issues or something they want to draw to my attention.

Interviewers: What advice would you give to a child that has social or academic problems?

Mrs. Quinn: Don’t be afraid to ask for help. It can be hard to manage issues alone. There are people like myself, who are always here to help you.
