Friends’ Central (16-10, 12-0) ended its season with a road loss to Episcopal Academy 3-1 in the first round of the Pennsylvania Independent Schools State Tournament. Junior Charles Bears gave up 3 runs, two earned in 5 1/3 innings of work. Fellow junior Bryan Rubin closed out the 6th inning in relief of Bears. The duo kept the Churchmen off balance throughout the contest and helped the team rebound from a 13-0 loss to Episcopal earlier in the season.
The Phoenix offense collected back to back hits to open up the 2nd. However, two line-drives at the home team cut a would be rally short. Friends’ Central got on the scoreboard in the 4th with two outs. Senior captain Aaron Ross drew a two-out walk, and stole second during fellow captain Hayden Gruber’s at-bat. Gruber worked a full count, and fouled off two 3-2 pitches before lining a single to center field to plate Ross.

Friends’ Central (16-9, 12-0) completed an undefeated Friends Schools League season by winning the Friends League Championship 6-0 over visiting Germantown Friends School. Senior captain Aaron Ross threw a complete game no-hitter, the second of the season against GFS. Ross struck out 7 batters on his way to his 7th FSL win of the season. The Phoenix played excellent defense to maintain the no-hitter. Center fielder Nicolas Harris stole an extra base hit in the 4th, and right fielder Hayden Gruber threw a runner out at first on a line drive in 5th.
The Phoenix offense broke the 0-0 tie in the 3rd inning when junior Jerome Allen drove a triple to deep centerfield to score Gruber from first. Fellow junior Charles Bears knocked in Allen on an 0-2 pitch with two outs. Allen knocked in pinch runner Will Ayres in the 5th, before Gruber scored on a double play. The home team extended the lead in the bottom of the 6th on three consecutive hits by Ardon Fryer (double), Bryan Rubin and Ross. On the day, the Phoenix collected 15 hits and 6 batters had multi-hit days. The team’s three captains, Ross, Rubin and Gruber went a combine 7-11 hitting in the 3rd, 4th and 5th spots in the line-up.
Friends’ Central completed the first undefeated season in Friends League history since the league expanded to 10 regular season games over 15 years ago.

Friends’ Central (15-9, 11-0) won its semi-final Friends Schools League game 12-2 over visiting Westtown School behind strong pitching and defense. Junior captain Bryan Rubin (W) allowed just one run in 4 innings as the starter. Rubin struck out 2 and scattered three hits. Senior captain Aaron Ross worked the final two innings, striking out 4, and allowing one run on two hits. The Phoenix defense was stellar behind both pitchers.
The Phoenix offense got on the scoreboard first in the 3rd inning. After back-to-back singles by freshman Joey Lawall and Nicolas Harris, the two moved up on a wild pitch. Rubin knocked in the first run of the game with a fielder’s choice to second base. A wild pitch and a balk call in the 4th inning plated two more runs for the home team. After going down in order in the 5th and clinging to a one run lead, the Phoenix offense rattled off 9 runs in the bottom of the 6th inning to end the game by the 10-run mercy rule. The big hit of the innings came off the bat of Lawall, a three-RBI double to right-center field. Consecutive singles by Harris, Ardon Fryer, Rubin and Ross, followed Lawalls clutch hit. Senior catcher Danny Rogers plated the final two runs of the game with a two-RBI single to left field.
Friends’ Central plays host to Germantown Friends School on Saturday, May 18th for the Friends Schools League Championship game at 12 noon. The FSL All Star Game will follow the Championship Game.
Friends’ Central (14-9, 10-0) wrapped up its regular season with a 15-3 home victory over Phelps School in front of a large crowd of alumni as part of the Reunion Weekend festivities. Aaron Ross (W) and Jerome Allen each threw shutout innings to open the game, and Ben Fogel and Gil Dreyfus pitching the final 3 of the 5 inning game. The four pitchers combined to strike out 4 batter and only walk one.
The Phoenix offense was led by Ross, and fellow captains Bryan Rubin and Hayden Gruber. The trio combine to go 6 for 7, with 5 doubles, and 7 RBI. Fogel had two singles and scored twice, and junior Will Ayres collected his first Varsity hit and RBI.
Friends’ Central hosts Westtown School on Wednesday, May 15th for a semi-final Friends School League match-up at 4:00pm.
