Big 6th Inning Powers Phoenix Into Championship Game

Friends’ Central (15-9, 11-0) won its semi-final Friends Schools League game 12-2 over visiting Westtown School behind strong pitching and defense. Junior captain Bryan Rubin (W) allowed just one run in 4 innings as the starter. Rubin struck out 2 and scattered three hits. Senior captain Aaron Ross worked the final two innings, striking out 4, and allowing one run on two hits. The Phoenix defense was stellar behind both pitchers.

The Phoenix offense got on the scoreboard first in the 3rd inning. After back-to-back singles by freshman Joey Lawall and Nicolas Harris, the two moved up on a wild pitch. Rubin knocked in the first run of the game with a fielder’s choice to second base. A wild pitch and a balk call in the 4th inning plated two more runs for the home team. After going down in order in the 5th and clinging to a one run lead, the Phoenix offense rattled off 9 runs in the bottom of the 6th inning to end the game by the 10-run mercy rule. The big hit of the innings came off the bat of Lawall, a three-RBI double to right-center field. Consecutive singles by Harris, Ardon Fryer, Rubin and Ross, followed Lawalls clutch hit. Senior catcher Danny Rogers plated the final two runs of the game with a two-RBI single to left field.
